I highly recommend re-watching this “Hey Arnold” episode. In retrospect, I didn’t fully understand how special this time of year is. Now growing up, I realized hanging on to these morals and values that these shows try to instill in us is something we all should do.
If you don’t have the time, I believe there’s something everybody should take from this episode. To refresh your memories; in this episode, Arnold got Mr. Huynh for secret santa. However, the only thing Mr. Huynh ever really wanted was to be reunited with his daughter. Arnold made it his Christmas goal to give Mr. Huynh this reunion— a sort of “Christmas miracle” as they put it. In order to do so, Arnold agreed to do the Christmas shopping of a Federal Government employee, in exchange that he finds Mai, Mr. Huynh’s daughter. Failing to complete the Christmas shopping list, Helga overheard and traded her Nancy Sponolli Snow boots, the last item on the list, for the reunification of Mr. Huynh and Mai. At the end of the episode, Herald turned to Arnold and said, ” I guess Christmas miracles really do happen.”
We have no idea how much a stranger off the street has endure, or even how much a trouble a close friend have faced. On our course through life we are jaded and become cynical, but during these holiday seasons I truly believe it’s that time of year that we try to salvage what’s left of our innocence and allow others to do the same. We are all capable of giving someone a miracle; even the smallest glimpse of hope.
This may sound idealistic and absurd, but I think we all want to believe this. It probably doesn’t even make sense, cause I’m dead tired and have drowned out every instance of unhappiness with Christmas specials… “It’s the most wonderful time…. “
